Sheffield Yoga Centre (SYC) opened in Sept 2005 in a former Chapel in Walkley.
It now contains 2 lovely halls, a cosy meeting/ changing room, kitchen and library. New disabled facilities have recently been installed to make the building accessible to people in wheelchairs. |
The centre is devoted to the teaching of Iyengar yoga and has a full range of Classes, catering for those at Introductory level through to more experienced, intermediate students. There are also classes for women, children and a Teacher Training programme. There are workshops on the first Saturday of every month and a range of other weekend workshops (Please check our Events page for details). The centre provides an opportunity for people of any age and background to experience the benefits of yoga in a warm and welcoming environment.
The centre seeks to maintain the high standards established by the world renowned Yogacharya BKS Iyengar, whose system we follow. All teachers at the centre hold the certification mark, authorising them to teach the Iyengar methods of yoga and which demonstrates the extensive training they have completed. |

The centre is fully equipped with yoga props - mats, blankets etc and also now has the specialist props required for teaching therapeutic classes.
There is a weekly general therapeutic class as well as one specially for people with ME/CFS.
Iyengar Yoga
This centre is dedicated to the style of yoga taught by BKS Iyengar and his family. The main teachers at the Centre regularly study at his internationally respected Yoga Institute, in Pune, India. The emphasis is on correct stretching and alignment of the body through sequenced poses. The centre teachers are highly experienced in adapting these poses to suit the ability of all individuals by adapting them and using equipment.

Travelling by bus
Buses are 94, 95 along South Rd from town, then walk down Hadfield St and down the hill, or on Infirmary Rd the tram stops just past Burgoyne Rd (routes to Hillsborough and Malin Bridge) or take the 81, 82, 83, 86 buses from town towards Stannington, Hillsborough.
Then walk up the hill!
Travelling by car
Note the one-way system, and the blocking-off of Hadfield St to cars. So for drivers, take Fulton Rd or the next one parallel to Fulton and get to Burgoyne Rd by going left at the bottom then first right. The Sheffield Yoga Centre is on the left opposite Ruskin Park.
There is plenty of parking but only on the park side. Please do not park in front of residents' houses.
Travelling for outside Sheffield
If you are travelling from outside Sheffield, more comprehensive and detailled directions on how to get to the centre can be found below or in the Direction document.
We recommend that, unless you know the city well, when travelling from the north, east and south you should approach Sheffield by the M1 (and M18 if necessary). From the west, use the M60 and A628 Woodhead Pass or A57 is a more scenic route, following the signs for Sheffield.
Important changes: Please note that the road system in Sheffield has recently been completely redeveloped. SatNav and other web travel instructions will not be updated until at least summer 2008,
and are currently giving incorrect information.
Please do not rely on SatNav and other web travel instructions around the Sheffield Ring Road;
use these instructions and follow signs for "University of Sheffield".
From the south and east (via M1 and M18, Sheffield Parkway)
Approach Sheffield on the M1 and leave the motorway at junction 33, following the 'City Centre' signs along the dual carriageway A630/A57/A61 Parkway. Shortly after entering the 40 mph zone, turn right onto the Ring Road at junction 1 - Cutler's Gate.
Continue along the Ring Road following signs for "University of Sheffield", "Barnsley A61" and later "Glossop A57", through junctions 10, 9, 8 and 7. At junction 7 - Shalesmoor - turn left and continue uphill along the Ring Road, still following signs for 'University of Sheffield' and 'Glossop A57'. Continue along Netherthorpe Road to the next roundabout - junction 6 - University Square (flower bed in centre).
At this big roundabout take the exit for Walkley. Continue up hill for 1 mile or so until you see the Walkley sign on the right of the road (you will just have passed 'Sheffield Buddhist Centre'). Take the first right down Fulton rd and at the 'T' junction at the bottom take a left, then first right into Burgoyne Rd. The Yoga Centre is 200 yds down on left.
Please park opposite Ie on right of road, avoiding our neighbours’ driveways.
From the north (via M1 and A61)
Leave the M1 at junction 36 - signed "Sheffield (North) A61". At the roundabout take the third exit and follow signs for "Sheffield (North) A61" and later "City Centre A61" for 9 miles, passing through Grenoside and Hillsborough.
After passing Hillsborough Football ground, continue on A61 and look out for 'Morrisons'/'B&Q 'on the right. Keep in right hand lane until you see 'Mecca Bingo' hall on right and take a sharp right turn just after this building. At traffic lights at top of short hill go right onto tram tracks and after a few yards at next traffic lights turn left up to Whitehouse Lane. Turn right and first left (look for white newsagents building on corner). This is Burgoyne Rd. Go up Burgoyne Rd and look for Ruskin Park on left. The Yoga Centre is a red brick building opposite the park.
Please park here on left, avoiding local residents’ driveways.
From the west and Manchester (via M60, M67, A57)
Leave the M60 (east) at junction 24 - signed 'Sheffield'. Continue following the 'Sheffield' signs along the M67 and the A57 (Snake Pass). Go through Glossop and over the snake pass on A57. When you near Sheffield look for 'Rivelin Water Treatment' plant and go straight on for another 2 miles passing the 'Valley Garden Centre'. Soon after look for pub on right and turn immediately left after it down Stephen Hill. Folllow the bend until a 'T' junction. Continue along up hill (bumpy road) until you emerge onto Bolehill Road with flats on the right. Carry on to next traffic lights at 'Walkley Library' and turn right into South Road. Pass the post box and supermarket on left and turn down Cundy St. At the 'Royal Hotel' pub, turn right then first left into Burgoyne Rd. The Centre is a red brick building on the 220 yds on left.
Please park opposite by the park and take care not to obstruct any driveways.
Thanks
