Yoga class at Sheffield Yoga Centre

The centre seeks to maintain the high standards established by the world renowned Yogacharya BKS Iyengar, whose system we follow. All teachers at the centre hold the certification mark, authorising them to teach the Iyengar methods of yoga and which demonstrates the extensive training they have completed.

The centre Director is Frances Homewood, an Iyengar Yoga teacher of 25 years experience, who has studied in Pune, India with the Iyengar family regularly over the last 15 years. Frances Homewood

The centre is fully equipped with yoga props - mats, blankets etc and also now has the specialist props required for teaching therapeutic classes. There is a weekly general therapeutic class as well as one specially for people with ME/CFS.

Whilst we do not run special classes for pregnant women, if you attend an Iyengar class already, or have done so in the past, it is fine to continue your attendance. Just make sure the teacher knows you are pregnant. The poses will be adapted safely for you and the baby.
If you wish to start classes during your pregnancy please consult Frances Homewood, our senior teacher, on 0114 2346475 / 07944 169238 for guidance. She has many years experience of teaching pregnant women.

Travelling for outside Sheffield

If you are travelling from outside Sheffield, more comprehensive and detailed directions on how to get to the centre can be found below or in the "Directions to SYC" document.

We recommend that, unless you know the city well, when travelling from the north, east and south you should approach Sheffield by the M1 (and M18 if necessary). From the west, use the M60 and A628 Woodhead Pass or A57 is a more scenic route, following the signs for Sheffield.

From the North (via M1 and A61)

  • Leave the M1 at junction 36 signed posted "Sheffield (North) A61".  At the roundabout take the third exit and follow signs for "Sheffield (North) A61" and later "City Centre A61" for 9 miles, passing through Grenoside and Hillsborough.
  • Head south on Penistone road (A61). After passing Hillsborough Football ground, continue on A61 and look out for Morrisons / B&Q on right.
  • Keep in right hand lane. About one mile further on you’ll see Mecca Bingo hall on right (a tall building on the right visible from the road). At the first set of traffic lights just after this building, take a sharp right turn into Flora Street.
  • At top of Flora Street in quick succession turn right into Infirmary Road (B607), first left into Wood Street, at lights right into Whitehouse Lane, then turn first left into Burgoyne Road.

The Sheffield Yoga Centre is a red brick building located on the right, nearly at the top of the road, opposite Ruskin Park.
Please park opposite by the park and take care not to obstruct any of our neighbours' driveways. Thanks

From the South and East (via M1 and M18, Sheffield Parkway)

  • Approach Sheffield on the M1 and leave the motorway at junction 33, following the City Centre signs along the dual carriageway A630/A57/A61 Parkway.
  • Shortly after entering the 40mph zone, turn right onto the Ring Road at junction 1 - Cutler's Gate.
Continue along the Ring Road following signs for "University of Sheffield", "Barnsley A61" and later "Glossop A57", through junctions 10, 9, 8 and 7.
  • At junction 7 - Shalesmoor - turn left and continue uphill along the Ring Road, still following signs for "University of Sheffield" and "Glossop A57".
  • Continue uphill along Netherthorpe Road (the Supertram tracks run in the middle of this road) to the next roundabout - junction 6 - University Square (flower bed in centre). Stay on the right hand lane.
At this big roundabout take the 4th exit sign-posted “St George’s Hospital/Walkley”, up Bolsover Road.
  • Continue up the hill for 1 mile or so, pass the Sheffield Buddhist Centre on your left and carry on until you see the “Walkley” sign on the right.
  • Take the first right down Fulton road and at the T junction at the bottom turn left, then first right into Burgoyne Road.
The Sheffield Yoga Centre is a red brick building on the left, opposite Ruskin Park.
Please park opposite by the park and take care not to obstruct any of our neighbours' driveways. Thanks

From the West and Manchester (via M60, M67, A57)

    • Leave the M60 (east) at junction 24 signed "Sheffield".
    • Continue following the "Sheffield" signs along the M67 and the A57 (through the Snake Pass).
    • Go through Glossop and head east on A57/Snake Pass Road toward Sheffield
    • Continue to follow A57 for about 15 miles.
    • Turn slight left into A6101/Rivelin Valley Road, marked for Hillsborough.
    • After the Rivelin café on your left , ignore the 1st right turn into Rivelin Road and straight after take the 2nd right into Walkley Bank Road.
    • At a crossed road with a tall stone wall on your right turn right again to stay on Walkley Bank Road (do not go straight onto Morley Street).
    • At the Crown pub junction (opposite the  Florist pub) turn left then slightly right almost immediately to continue onto Walkley Road.
    • Pass the Belle Vue pub on your left and turn slightly right onto Whitehouse Road.
Turn 4th right into Burgoyne Road.

The Sheffield Yoga Centre is a red brick building on the right, opposite Ruskin Park.
Please park opposite by the park and take care not to obstruct any of our neighbours' driveways. Thanks
